Time and money are precious. When we shop, we want to save as much as possible of both. However, as environmentally-aware consumers we are increasingly assessing the amount of greenhouse gases that are emitted when we buy shoes, books or household appliances. But what is actually more damaging for the environment – online shopping or shopping locally?

Shopping via the internet is no longer just an up-and-coming challenger to the high street. You can now order any product you want from the comfort of your own sofa.

Online shopping in India is an emerging trend for marketers to promote their merchandise in wide geographical area using internet and the trend looks likely to grow upwards over the coming decade.

The online shopping revolution hasn’t actually been a revolution. The internet and smartphones have certainly changed where we shop, But online shopping has not changed the nature of shopping itself. You still choose a product you want to buy, pay for it, and then wait to collect it or have it delivered. This process is exactly the same in a shop as it is online.

1. Keep your operating system, browser and apps updated

It goes without saying, but updates are fundamental to keeping your devices and any transactions you do online secure. Each new release brings improved security and fixes to potential security holes. On most desktop operating systems auto-updates are enabled by default. When it comes to apps, the relevant app store will notify you when an update is available.

2. Get an extension for extra security on your browser

If you use the opera browser its malware and fraud protection will automatically warn you if a site is known for distributing malware or for being malicious. To add even more protection, download the extension WOT(Web of Trust), which shows websites’ reputation as a traffic light next to the search results in your search engine. Red is a no go.

3. Know where and who you’re buying from

The number of phishing attacks has increased in the online shopping era, so before you trust a site, make sure the name is spelled correctly on the address bar, look for reviews by other customers on third-party sites, and verify that the address and contact details belong to a real retailer.

4. Make sure your connection is secure

Just the other day I was about to complete a purchase online when I realized the connection was not encrypted! In such situations don’t enter your credit card details or proceed with the purchase. To show that a connection is secure, most browsers display a green, locked padlock icon in the address field.

5. Guard your personal information

Never share sensitive information like passwords or your personal identification number. Double-check the terms and conditions of the site to know what policy they follow when it comes to data privacy. And last, think twice before you share your email address, phone number or postal address – what is it going to be used for? Is it necessary?

Conclusion Buying and selling online can be very convenient and rewarding but you always have to protect yourself. If a deal looks too good to be true, it usually is. If you don't feel 100% secure on a particular site, leave it and find something else. Also make sure that your computer is well protected before you begin any transaction that involves sensitive information. There are a lot of scams on the internet that can negatively affect your credit score and cost you money, so be proactive in your research to get the most out of shopping online
