Social networking sites is the hottest online trend of the last few years. Not only do social media sites provide a way to keep in contact with friends, but they can also offer opportunities for professional online networking. Social networking could be advantageous for your career, but there are also disadvantages to consider.

Advantages

1.FACE TO FACE ARE ENDANGERED

A huge advantage of these social communities has a reverse side effect that is also a big disadvantage of social networking platform- they reduce or eliminate face-to-face socialization. Because of the autonomy afforded by the virtual world, individuals are free to create a fantasy persona and can pretend to be someone else.t is hard to say no, be rude, or ignore someone when you are looking them in the eye.

2.PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING

For professionals and academics, social networking sites allow users to create networks of like-minded people. Academics find other scholars to share research or ideas, or simply to talk to and "get their name out there." Professionals find mutual friends and possible clients, employers, or business partners. Social networking site expands the horizons of what sort of contacts people can make in their professional lives.

Facilitates open communication, leading to enhanced information discovery and delivery.

3.Allows employees to discuss ideas, post news, ask questions and share links.

4.Provides an opportunity to widen business contacts.

5.Targets a wide audience, making it a useful and effective recruitment tool.

6.Improves business reputation and client base with minimal use of advertising.

7.Expands market research, implements marketing campaigns, delivers communications and directs interested people to specific web sites.

8.Stay informed about the world.

Disadvantages

1. Many people use social networking sites as their only form of communication. Wishing happy birthdays on walls instead of in person or over the phone.

2. It can cause a great barrier between those people who have access to the internet and to those people who don’t.

3.Opens up the possibility for hackers to commit fraud and launch spam and virus attacks.

4.Increases the risk of people falling prey to online scams that seem genuine, resulting in data or identity theft.

5.Potentially results in negative comments from employees about the company or potential

6. legal consequences if employees use these sites to view objectionable, illicit or offensive material.

With so many modes of social networking platform we all feel that we are lucky but the ground reality is that we have become slaves to these modes. We are glued to one gadget or the other, round the clock.

According to my research on the Internet, 56% of the people on social media are addicted to Facebook. They might not be connected to loved ones in the real world. And, when it comes to mobiles, they are more important than anything else. However, to get rid from the shackles of slavery resulting from modern means, we need to wake up. A cell phone does not bring you close to people but takes you far away from the person sitting next to you! Today people prefer to text or call a person rather than going to meet them. This increases the distance between people and the device which was supposed to bring people close becomes the key factor that makes them un-social.
